Awake is a community of people seeking to follow Jesus and wake up to the presence of God along a stretch of Seattle’s Aurora Avenue (Highway 99) near the communities of Green Lake and Licton Springs. Awake, which began early in 2008, is passionate about living in the grace of the risen Lord Jesus Christ and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God into this emerging neighborhood through the proclamation of the Word and acts of service, justice, mercy, and compassion. Awake is not so much about getting people to go to church as it is about getting the church to go to people with the liberating news of Jesus.
MISSION
Just as the first followers of Jesus sought to revolve their life together around the reality of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, we long to do the same in our day and our place. We’ve identified the following as four essential marks of our life together:
Jesus
Jesus Christ is our teacher, Lord, and Savior. We follow and worship him. Therefore, in response to the love of God and the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power of the Spirit we dedicate ourselves to worship, prayer, Scripture, Eucharist, grace, repentance, hospitality, service, justice, mercy, and compassion.
Aurora
Aurora is our neighborhood. We are attentive to the movement of the Spirit of God in this place. Since we seek to align ourselves with the ways God is bringing his kingdom up and down Aurora Ave, we commit to loving our neighbors, to partnering with neighborhood residents and organizations, to encouraging and supporting the churches of Aurora, and to serving in this place.
Relationships
We are a community. We enter into loving, self-giving, relationships with one another. We encourage and challenge one another. We rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn. We carry each other’s burdens. We serve, create, and dream together. We eat together – a lot.
Sent
We are sent. We are sent by God to be a blessing. We are sent by Jesus to make disciples. We are sent in the power of the Spirit to proclaim the good news of God’s salvation through Jesus Christ. This reality guides our life together, our collective mission, our vocations, and our relationships… it guides everything.
